NEUROBIOLOGY LAB

Welcome to the website of Carlos Matute's team

The Neurobiology Lab is a CIBERNED Research Team lead by Dr. Carlos Matute, located at the Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience and at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).

We study the molecular basis of neurodegeneration and the role of glial cells in neurological diseases. In particular, we investigate how neurons and glial cells die following insults which are relevant to neurological diseases including Alzheimer´s disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and brain ischemia. To that end, we use experimental paradigms in vitro and in vivo in which we alter neurotransmitter, calcium or the extracellular environment homeostasis to activate signaling cascades and discover new mechanisms leading to cell death and how to prevent it. Our research covers a broad range of topics, such as amyloid-beta pathology, white matter damage and dopaminergic neurodegeneration, using state-of-the-art tools focused on all glial cells (astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia and glial progenitors) and their surrounding extracellular matrix. We aim to unravel mechanisms or molecular targets that can be exploited for the development of new therapies.
